Is the new Ford GT in a different "segment" than the old one? Why?

Maybe I misread an article or two, but when the new one was unveiled, somehow I thought it would be of course at least a supercar, but cheaper than its rivals…sort like what Acura tries to do with the NSX, or indeed, the old Ford GT.

The price of the 2005 GT was $140Kish, then raised to $150Kish.

Adjusted for inflation that’s about $180K nowadays.

So then why are there so many rumours that the new one will be $400k+ ? That’s more than any non-limited-production Ferrari, no?

And why are there supposedly only going to be less than 1000 built?

What would be the advantage of Ford doing this? Sure, it makes the car more rare, but A) Ford obviously doesn’t see any money from 2nd-hand sales 25+ years from now, and B) I’ve seen some people argue that the old one will be more of a “collectible” for its retro style.

Why would for be trying to reach a “higher” super/hypercar segment? The whole “trickle-down theory of halo car/Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” was debunked on here, no?

So am I looking at this wrong? Is it more correct to see the new one as a “budget” hypercar rather than supercar? Or does it just cost much more because of exotic materials?

I’d call the new one borderline hypercar. The old/new GT wasn’t really innovative in any way, just a nice collection of proven tech, with an old design. The new one is state of the art.

Sad, but true.

Not sure about the $400k+ part (rumors are rumors), but I do know the previous GT’s online have $300k pricetags now.

It definitely seems people have this concern…I just can’t tell if the concern is stronger over the new one or the previous one, heh

Well it has a mid-engine V6... so that must mean it’s in the Pontiac Fiero segment!!!

LOL

*State of the art for Ford

It's not state of the art in the automotive industry as a whole.

I don’t know, but it looks like there might be a BMW kidney grille…perhaps a Z3M Coupe “breadbox” ?

That’s kind of what confuses me. If it’s going to be that much, if it’s going to be a racer, why not go all the way, make it $750K - $1MM, give it electric drive, and make it a full-fledged P1/LaFerrari/918 competitor? Get that good ol’ LeMans Ferrari vs Ford rivalry going again haha

Ford said they didn’t want hybrid power because it would add weight they didn’t want. Rumors have the 3.5 Ecoboost putting out upwards of 700 hp and above, all in a car that is almost certainly less than 3000 lbs. Expect the power to weight ratio to be very similar to the P1, 918, and LaFerrari.

The 2005-2006 GT had a lot of common parts with lesser Fords, and the cost-cutting showed, though not as badly as a ZR1 or Z06. The $150K price was more than the sum of its parts - despite the usage of aluminum - but we’ve seen how their value has just about doubled. Here we have some pretty extreme usage and shaping of carbon fiber, a more refined powertrain, and, like McLaren, it seems a pursuit of lower emissions without the expense of power and performance avoiding gas guzzler taxes. The advanced components and build quality - and more bespoke parts and construction - seem to be fairly relative to the price.
